A tear is not water
They say a tear is 1% water and 99% emotion.
But the truth is that a tear is much more than that. It is a silent cry. A wound that has found no words. A piece of the soul that, unable to remain hidden any longer, finds its way into the light.
Tears do not begin in the eyes. They begin in the heart.
They are born on nights when we miss someone who is no longer there. In the hugs we never gave. In the words we never said. In goodbyes that came too soon.
Every tear tells a story that no one else can see. It speaks of loves left unfinished, dreams shattered, and people who left such a deep mark that even time has failed to erase it.
And yet, we continue to hurt one another with surprising ease.
A single word can destroy someone’s self-esteem. A look of indifference can extinguish hope. A betrayal can turn trust into a desert. And too often, we fail to realize the damage we cause.
We have grown accustomed to judging without knowing someone else’s story. To offering opinions without listening. To speaking without considering that behind every face there may be a battle we know nothing about.
We do not know how many tears the person standing before us has shed. We do not know how many sleepless nights they have endured. We do not know how many words they have swallowed, how many silences they have carried, simply to keep moving forward.
Perhaps that is why tenderness is an act of courage.
Kindness costs nothing. Listening costs nothing. A hug costs nothing. Yet for someone who is hurting inside, these small gestures can mean everything.
There are tears no one ever sees. The ones that fall silently while everyone assumes we are fine. The ones we hide behind a smile. The ones we quickly wipe away because we were taught that showing emotion is a sign of weakness.
But crying is not weakness. Crying is feeling. And feeling is one of the clearest signs that we are still human.
Before you hurt someone, stop and think.
Think that perhaps they are already carrying a world that is falling apart. Perhaps all they need is an outstretched hand. Remember that some wounds do not bleed, yet can hurt more deeply than any visible wound.
Tears cannot be bought. They cannot be replaced. They cannot simply be erased.
A tear is the price the heart pays when it loves too deeply, misses too much, or carries more pain than words can express.
And if there is one thing life should teach us, it is this: we never know how long we will have the people we love beside us.
So love without measure. Hug more. Judge less.
And never forget that behind a single tear, there may be an entire ocean of emotion.
