University of Barcelona ranked Spain’s top university in 2026 Shanghai Ranking
The University of Barcelona (UB) has once again been ranked as the highest-performing Spanish university in the Academic Ranking of World Universities (ARWU), also known as the Shanghai Ranking.
The ARWU is one of the world’s most prestigious international university rankings. It evaluates around 2,500 universities worldwide and publishes a ranking of the top 1,000 institutions.
American universities once again dominated the top of the global ranking this year. Harvard took first place, followed by Stanford in second and the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) in third.
A total of 12 Spanish universities made it into the global top 500 this year. The Autonomous University of Barcelona (UAB) and the Complutense University of Madrid were placed in the 201–300 range.
The Autonomous University of Madrid, the University of Granada, the University of the Basque Country and the University of Valencia ranked in the 301–400 range.
The Polytechnic University of Valencia, Pompeu Fabra University, the University of Navarre, the University of Seville and the University of Zaragoza were placed in the 401–500 range.
The Shanghai Ranking is based on six key research and academic performance indicators. These include the number of Nobel Prizes and Fields Medals awarded to alumni and faculty, the number of highly cited researchers, publications in Nature and Science, research papers indexed in major international databases, and academic performance adjusted for the size of the institution. The post University of Barcelona ranked Spain’s top university in 2026 Shanghai Ranking first appeared on All PYRENEES.
