Siemens Ultra Low Floor: the lowest floor-height vehicle in the world
Siemens ULF
The Ultra Low Floor tram (ULF) is a low-floor tram operating in Vienna (Austria) and Oradea (Romania), built by a consortium composed of Siemens and ELIN. It has the lowest floor-height of any such vehicle.
Overview
The ULF tram features a low floor, which is level with the pavement, approximately 20 cm above the road surface. This makes it easier for people in wheelchairs and those with pushchairs to board the tram. This design required a new running gear: the axles were replaced by a sophisticated electronic motor control system. The auxiliary equipment was installed beneath the carriage roof.
ULF technology was tested in the early 1990s, and carriages of this model have been in service on Vienna’s tram network since 1998. By mid-2008, 302 such trams were in operation.
Siemens ULF trams began operating in Oradea (Romania) on 24 April 2008. These are the only ULF trams outside Austria.
