Belize, El Salvador strengthen bilateral ties through third binational commission

By Zoila Palma:  Belize and El Salvador have reaffirmed their commitment to strengthening bilateral relations following a series of high-level engagements in San Salvador focused on regional integration and practical cooperation. On Tuesday, August 11, Chief Executive Officer for Foreign Affairs and Foreign Trade, Oscar Arnold, joined representatives from across the Central American Integration System (SICA) to welcome Ambassador Lina Ajoy as she assumed the post of SICA Secretary-General. Belize’s Ambassador to El Salvador, Lou-Anne Burns Martinez, and Belize’s Ambassador to Mexico and Coordinator of Belize’s Presidency Pro Tempore, Amalia Mai, also participated in the engagement. The meeting highlighted Belize’s continued commitment to regional integration and to advancing initiatives that produce tangible benefits for people across Central America. On Wednesday, August 12, Belize and El Salvador convened the Third Belize-El Salvador Binational Commission in San Salvador. Vice Minister of Foreign Affairs of El Salvador, Adriana Mira, led the Salvadoran delegation, while Ambassador Arnold headed Belize’s delegation. The commission provided an opportunity for both countries to strengthen their bilateral relationship and identify new areas for cooperation. Discussions covered trade, regional integration, defence and security, migration, health, agriculture, education and tourism, with officials from several Belizean ministries participating both in person and virtually.
