Sarteneja fisherman Mauri Gomez charged with stabbing murder of Jose Arteaga

By Breaking Belize News Staff: Police have formally arrested and charged 33-year-old fisherman Mauri Julian Gomez with murder in connection with the stabbing death of 35-year-old Jose Luis Arteaga. Gomez was also charged with wounding in relation to injuries allegedly inflicted on 34-year-old Marvin Alexander Arteaga, who survived the incident. The deadly confrontation occurred on Wednesday, August 12, during a fishing trip near Ranguana Caye, approximately 18 to 20 miles off the coast of Placencia. Reports indicate that police received information shortly after 4:30 p.m. that two fishermen had been stabbed aboard a vessel. Initial police investigations indicate that an altercation broke out among fishermen at the caye, during which Jose Luis Arteaga and Marvin Arteaga were allegedly stabbed. Other fishermen reportedly managed to subdue the suspect. Because the group was travelling by sailboat, it took some time to transport the injured men toward Placencia, where police met the vessel. Jose Luis Arteaga was transported to the Placencia Polyclinic but later died from his injuries. Marvin Arteaga received medical treatment for his injuries. Arteaga, a Belize City fisherman, was the father of five children. His wife told Channel 7 that their youngest child had been born only four days before his death and that Arteaga never got the opportunity to meet or hold the newborn. She described him as a hardworking fisherman and devoted father who regularly spent eight or nine days at sea providing for his family. Gomez, who has been identified in local reports as a fisherman from Sarteneja Village, Corozal District, was formally charged on Thursday, August 13, with murder and wounding in connection with the incident.
