Willie Chan appointed acting IICA Representative in Belize

By Zoila Palma:  The Inter-American Institute for Cooperation on Agriculture (IICA) has appointed Willie Chan as its Acting Representative in Belize, effective June 1, 2026. Chan succeeds the previous IICA Representative and will lead the organization’s technical cooperation efforts in Belize. Chan has served with IICA Belize since 2017 as a Technical Coordinator, bringing more than a decade of experience in climate change, sustainable agriculture, rural development, project management and institutional strengthening. During his tenure, he has worked closely with the Government of Belize, producer organizations, development partners, academia and the private sector. He holds a Master’s Degree in Climate Change from the Universidad Europea del Atlántico in Spain and a Bachelor’s Degree in Agriculture from Zamorano University in Honduras. His areas of expertise include climate-smart agriculture, project development, stakeholder engagement, capacity building, climate change resilience, sustainable food systems and institutional strengthening. IICA said Chan’s appointment comes at a time when Belize continues to advance efforts toward a more productive, resilient, inclusive and sustainable agricultural sector. Under his leadership, the organization said it will continue working alongside national and international partners to promote innovative solutions and strengthen agricultural development for the benefit of Belizean communities. The IICA Belize Office congratulated Chan on his appointment and expressed confidence that he will continue strengthening partnerships that contribute to the transformation of Belize’s agriculture sector.
