EU Contributes €10 Million to Afghanistan Humanitarian Fund, UN Says

The European Union has contributed €10 million to the Afghanistan Humanitarian Fund to support life-saving assistance for people in need, the United Nations Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs (OCHA) said Thursday. OCHA said in a post on X that it welcomed the contribution and thanked the European Union for supporting the delivery of humanitarian services to vulnerable people in Afghanistan. The UN office said the funding would help humanitarian organizations continue providing life-saving assistance to millions of people across the country. The contribution comes as Afghanistan continues to face a major humanitarian crisis, with millions of people requiring humanitarian assistance amid poverty, food insecurity and limited access to essential services. Humanitarian organizations have warned that reductions in international funding are affecting the delivery of assistance, including programs supporting children suffering from malnutrition. The World Food Programme (WFP) previously said that more than 13,000 children in Afghanistan were unable to access malnutrition treatment programs in 2025 because of reductions in humanitarian funding. The latest EU contribution is directed to the Afghanistan Humanitarian Fund, a UN-managed pooled fund that supports humanitarian organizations responding to urgent needs in the country. UN agencies and humanitarian partners continue to rely heavily on international funding to maintain food assistance, health services, nutrition programs and other essential support for vulnerable communities in Afghanistan. The UN has repeatedly appealed to international donors to maintain funding for humanitarian operations as needs remain high and available resources decline. The European Union’s contribution provides additional funding for humanitarian operations, although humanitarian agencies say sustained international support remains necessary to meet the needs of vulnerable Afghans.
