Indian-Origin Teen Charged With Killing Mother and Brother in US After Online Searches About ‘Kill Family’ Fantasies

A 17-year-old Indian-origin student has been charged with killing his mother and younger brother at their home in Acton, Massachusetts, after an overnight manhunt ended with his arrest, authorities said. Arjun Aravind, a student at Acton-Boxborough Regional High School, is accused of fatally assaulting his 45-year-old mother, Sudha Venkatesan, and his 14-year-old brother, Siddharth Aravind, inside the family’s home on Tuesday. He faces two counts of murder, as well as assault and motor-vehicle-related charges, according to the Middlesex District Attorney’s Office. The victims were discovered after a tutor arrived at the home shortly after 6:30 p.m. for a scheduled appointment and could not enter. Aravind’s father, who had left for work earlier that day, was contacted and then asked police to conduct a welfare check. Officers found both victims dead inside the house with what authorities described as “obvious trauma.” The chief medical examiner has not yet released the exact cause and manner of death, and police have not disclosed the weapon involved. Aravind was missing when police arrived and was believed to have fled in his mother’s Honda Accord. Authorities launched a search and issued an alert for the teenager. Police later found him inside the vehicle in Wayland, Massachusetts, early Wednesday after responding to an unrelated alarm at a parking lot. He was taken into custody without incident. The district attorney’s office said the investigation also uncovered evidence of concerning online activity. Investigators allege that Aravind had recently used the internet and ChatGPT to explore theoretical ideas or fantasies about killing his family. Authorities said he had also used the AI chatbot to develop Gothic-style fictional stories and characters. Officials have not said that the online searches established a motive for the killings, and the investigation remains ongoing. Aravind was expected to appear in court on the charges. Because Massachusetts juvenile courts do not have jurisdiction over murder cases, he is expected to face the murder and related assault charges in Concord District Court.
