Tadej Pogačar Wins Fifth Tour de France Title, Joins Cycling’s Greatest Legends

Slovenian cyclist Tadej Pogačar won the 2026 Tour de France overall, securing his fifth Tour de France title. With this achievement, the 27-year-old joins an elite group of riders – Jacques Anquetil, Eddy Merckx, Bernard Hinault and Miguel Indurain, who have each won the race five times. Pogačar dominated the three-week race, winning five individual stages and taking the yellow jersey during the opening week. The battle for the overall classification effectively ended on Stage 6, when the Slovenian launched a decisive attack in the Pyrenees. His main rival, two-time Tour champion Jonas Vingegaard, later crashed and was forced to abandon the race on Stage 15, leaving Pogačar with an unassailable lead. Belgium’s Remco Evenepoel finished second in the general classification, 6 minutes and 26 seconds behind the winner. The final stage was unusual for another reason. Due to the devastating wildfires in southwestern France, security forces were redeployed to assist emergency services, prompting organizers to shorten the traditional final stage to Paris. Despite the revised route, the race still concluded on the iconic Champs-Élysées, where Dutch rider Mathieu van der Poel sprinted to victory after a successful late attack on the Montmartre climb. The 2026 edition also marked a historic milestone: for the first time in decades, no rider from France, Spain or Italy won a single stage of the Tour.
