International News: U.S. President Trump imposes new tariffs on dozens of countries

By Zoila Palma:  U.S. President Donald Trump has imposed new tariffs ranging from 10% to 12.5% on goods imported from dozens of US trading partners, including countries in Europe, China and India. The tariffs, announced Thursday and implemented Friday morning, affect goods from 60 trading partners that collectively account for 99.4% of US imports, CNN reports. The new measures come as a previous 10% near-blanket tariff imposed by Trump earlier this year has lapsed after the US Supreme Court ruled it unlawful. The latest tariffs follow a months-long investigation by the US Trade Representative into allegations of forced labor being used to produce goods exported to the United States and claims that countries have failed to address the practice. Some nations, including the European Union, Switzerland, Brazil and Australia, have rejected the allegations and criticized the new tariffs. US officials said the latest action is intended to provide greater predictability for businesses while advancing the administration’s trade goals.
