International News:Argentina President condemns World Cup critics over treatment of Messi and team
By Zoila Palma: Argentina President Javier Milei has defended the country’s national football team and Lionel Messi following widespread criticism of their controversial 2026 FIFA World Cup campaign.
Argentina reached the final but lost 1-0 to Spain in extra time, missing the opportunity to become only the third nation to win consecutive World Cup titles.
The team’s run drew criticism from rival fans over its narrow victories, aggressive style of play and a post-match altercation following Spain’s extra-time win in the final.
Some also accused FIFA and match officials of favoring Argentina, while Egypt reportedly filed a complaint seeking an investigation into refereeing decisions during its controversial 3-2 Round of 16 defeat to the South American side.
Milei responded to the criticism through a series of posts on Instagram, sharing one message that read: “Do you have enemies? It means you once defended something. We defend Argentina.”
He also posted: “The problem with Argentina is that we are conspicuous, we don’t go unnoticed, people are jealous of us, and we are good at almost everything.”
Milei later shared an AI-generated image of himself ripping open his suit to reveal an Argentina jersey, captioned: “Long live Argentina, damn it!”
His comments came after Messi’s wife, Antonela Roccuzzo, also defended Argentina in a social media post criticizing the team’s detractors.
“Proud to be Argentine. Argentina is exactly like a family; we may disagree and quarrel amongst ourselves, but if someone from outside comes and insults us, we will tear out their liver,” her Instagram story read.
