Future of Prague’s Výtoň Bridge Could Be Decided by the End of This Year

The Railway Administration (Správa železnic) is expected to decide on the future design of Prague’s Výtoň Railway Bridge by the end of this year. If the final plan is approved, construction could begin in 2028. The long-delayed project has become the centre of a dispute between transport authorities and heritage experts. While railway officials argue that a new three-track structure is necessary to meet future transport demands, conservationists continue to push for the preservation of the existing historic bridge. The Railway Administration has warned that the current condition of the bridge requires a final decision soon. Dispute over historic structure The main proposal currently under consideration is the construction of a new three-track railway bridge. Správa železnic selected a project team last year, but the plan remains controversial due to opposition from heritage authorities and groups seeking to preserve the original structure. The debate has also attracted international attention. UNESCO representatives are preparing a Heritage Impact Assessment (HIA), which will examine how the planned changes could affect Prague’s cultural heritage. The Transport Association supports the construction of a new bridge, arguing that rebuilding the existing structure would be more expensive and would not provide enough additional capacity. Construction could start in 2028 According to earlier plans from Správa železnic, work on the project was originally expected to begin sooner. A tender process was completed in 2025, with companies SUDOP Praha and TOP CON SERVIS selected for the preparation of the three-track bridge project. The estimated cost of the entire project is around CZK 3.4 billion. Because of the bridge’s deteriorating condition, trains currently operate on only one track and must reduce speed when crossing the structure. The construction of the additional third track alone is expected to cost approximately CZK 129 million.
