Elon Musk Predicts AI Will Surpass Human Intelligence Within Five Years

Elon Musk, the world’s richest man and CEO of SpaceX, has offered a striking vision of the world in 2036, predicting that artificial intelligence could surpass the combined intelligence of humanity within five years and outperform humans in almost every field within a decade. In an exclusive interview with The Economist, Musk described 2036 as the beginning of an era of “extraordinary abundance”, in which almost anyone could have anything they want. He said the future economy would be powered by a combination of “digital intelligence” and “physical intelligence”, as advances in AI coincide with the mass production of humanoid robots. Musk argued that the rapid development of AI and robotics could eventually drive the global economy towards what he described as an “unlimited” state of production. In such a world, he said, machines could produce more goods and services than humans would be able to consume, potentially making money far less important. People primarily use money to obtain necessities and services such as food, housing, transportation and entertainment, Musk said. If AI-powered systems and robots can produce those resources in abundance, the traditional economic role of money could eventually diminish significantly. However, Musk acknowledged that such a future remains far away and that money will continue to be necessary for the foreseeable future. His vision also included a stark warning about the risks posed by increasingly powerful AI. Musk argued that expecting humans to maintain complete control over an intelligence far more capable than themselves would be an act of “hubris”. He compared the potential intelligence gap between humans and advanced AI to the difference between humans and chimpanzees, suggesting that it could become difficult for humans to control systems that are vastly more intelligent and capable. Musk said the best approach to AI safety would be to create systems that are committed to seeking truth, remain curious and are aligned with human values. He argued that AI should be designed to prioritise the wellbeing and happiness of humanity. At the same time, Musk did not dismiss the possibility of catastrophic consequences. He estimated the risk of humanity being destroyed by killer robots at between 10% and 20%. Despite that risk, he said he did not see a realistic way to stop the rapid development of AI and robotics. Even if humanity had a hypothetical “stop button” for the technology, Musk suggested that pressing it might not be the best option because the potential benefits of AI could lead to an unprecedented era of abundance. He also warned that technological progress could be derailed by major global disasters, including a nuclear war. Such a conflict, he said, could prevent humanity from reaching the future of abundance he expects technology to deliver. Musk’s companies and business interests are closely tied to the technologies he believes will shape this future, including artificial intelligence, autonomous systems, humanoid robots and space technology. His predictions, however, remain highly speculative. AI researchers and economists continue to disagree over how quickly artificial intelligence could reach human-level or superhuman capabilities, while the economic impact of large-scale robotics and the possibility of a post-scarcity society remain subjects of intense debate. For now, Musk’s forecast presents two sharply contrasting possibilities: a future in which AI and robots create unprecedented abundance, and a world in which humanity struggles to control the technology it has created.
