Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi has welcomed Russia’s position on the escalating conflict between Iran and the United States during talks with his Russian counterpart, Sergey Lavrov, as tensions around the strategically important Strait of Hormuz continue to rise. Al Jazeera reported on Saturday, July 25, that Araghchi and Lavrov met on Friday on the sidelines of the Shanghai Cooperation Organisation (SCO) foreign ministers’ meeting in Kyrgyzstan. According to the report, Araghchi accused the United States of failing to honour its commitments and blamed Washington for the latest tensions surrounding the Strait of Hormuz. Lavrov, meanwhile, said Russia was prepared to provide any necessary assistance to support the establishment of a regional security mechanism. The meeting comes amid heightened military tensions between Iran and the United States, with the Strait of Hormuz emerging as a key point of contention. The waterway is one of the world’s most important routes for oil shipments and international maritime trade.
