UNICEF Provides Aid to Nearly 700 Flood-Affected Residents in Afghanistan’s Nuristan

The United Nations Children’s Fund (UNICEF) has provided humanitarian assistance to 690 people affected by recent devastating floods in Afghanistan’s eastern Nuristan province, the agency said Friday. UNICEF said the assistance was distributed among residents affected by the recent floods in the mountainous province. The aid included soap, kitchen supplies, hygiene kits and bathing items intended to help affected families meet basic household and sanitation needs. The assistance comes days after flash floods swept through parts of Nuristan, causing deaths and damaging homes and livelihoods. The disaster has added to humanitarian needs in a province where difficult terrain and limited infrastructure can make access to affected communities challenging. According to figures released by Taliban authorities, at least 24 people were killed and 85 others injured in the floods. The figures have not been independently verified.
