What is your child doing this Summer? Making memories, Learning new skills or scrolling social media?

By Zoila Palma: With schools closed for the summer break, children and teenagers across Belize have more free time on their hands. For parents, this can be a valuable opportunity to encourage their children to explore new interests, develop practical skills and build meaningful relationships. But it also raises an important question: How are our children spending their summer vacation? Across the country, organizations, churches, schools and community groups offer summer camps and activities designed to keep young people engaged and learning. From Youth in Agriculture Summer Camps that introduce children to farming, livestock and food production, to Vacation Bible Schools that focus on faith, values and fellowship, there are opportunities for children to learn outside the traditional classroom. Sports camps, arts programs and other youth activities also allow children to discover talents and interests they may not have had the chance to explore during the school year. Summer is also a chance for children to gain experiences that cannot always be taught in a classroom. A child who participates in an agriculture camp may learn how to care for animals, grow food and understand where the food on their plate comes from. Another child attending a Bible school may strengthen their faith and develop important values, while sports and creative programs can teach teamwork, discipline and confidence. These experiences can help shape a child’s character and expose them to possibilities that could influence their future. Parents can also use this time to consider how much time their children are spending on social media, video games and their phones. Technology has its benefits, but unlimited screen time can quickly consume an entire summer if there are no boundaries. Instead of allowing children to spend hours scrolling through TikTok, Instagram or other platforms, parents can encourage a healthier balance that includes reading, learning, helping at home, spending time outdoors and participating in activities that challenge them. Summer vacation should not mean that learning comes to a complete stop. Are our children taking advantage of every opportunity to learn something new, make friends and develop skills, or are they spending most of their days online? A summer filled with new experiences, learning and positive activities can create memories that last a lifetime—and perhaps even inspire a child to discover a passion that shapes their future.
