EDF and H4 Marseille Fos announced the signing of a Nuclear Production Allocation Contract

EDF and H4 Marseille Fos, a Franco-German company developing a synthetic fuel production facility in Fos-sur-Mer, announced the signing of a Nuclear Production Allocation Contract (CAPN). This partnership will support the development of H4 Marseille Fos’ synthetic fuel production project and contribute to the decarbonisation of the aviation sector. The CAPN signed between EDF and H4 Marseille Fos provides for the allocation of a share of approximately 150 MW of capacity from EDF’s operating nuclear fleet for a period of 10 years, starting from the planned commissioning of the facility in 2032. It also provides for a balanced sharing of risks and benefits relating to the volumes of electricity actually generated, in line with the structure of CAPNs signed by EDF. This partnership provides long-term visibility over a significant share of the project’s electricity requirements, a key factor in its development and financing. Once fully operational, the project will require approximately 2.8 TWh of electricity per year. From 2032, H4 Marseille Fos will produce 75,000 tonnes of synthetic sustainable aviation fuel (e-SAF) per year using Methanol-to-Jet technology. This will reduce greenhouse gas emissions by up to 84% compared with fossil-based kerosene, avoiding approximately 240,000 tonnes of CO₂ equivalent emissions each year. Launched in 2025, the H4 Marseille Fos project represents €1.6 billion of investment in France and will create 165 direct jobs. The project is fully aligned with the European target of a 10% share of e-SAF in aviation fuels by 2040, as set out in the ReFuelEU Aviation Regulation, as well as with France’s revised National Hydrogen Strategy. Electricity accounts for nearly one-third of the total cost of producing e-SAF. Against this backdrop, access to competitive, sovereign and low-carbon electricity is a key lever for strengthening the project’s economic viability. The post EDF and H4 Marseille Fos announced the signing of a Nuclear Production Allocation Contract first appeared on All PYRENEES.
