Iraqi PM meets Iranian president in Tehran

Baghdad (IraqiNews.com) – Iraqi Prime Minister Ali al-Zaidi met on Thursday with Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian in Tehran, marking his first official visit to Iran since taking office. Al-Zaidi’s reception in the Iranian capital was followed by a bilateral meeting with Pezeshkian and a joint session attended by a high-level Iraqi delegation, according to a statement issued by the Prime Minister’s Office (PMO). The Iraqi prime minister proposed a diplomatic initiative focused on stabilizing the region in light of recent escalations in military operations between the United States and Iran. Al-Zaidi said in a statement on X that he will address matters of shared interest, bilateral cooperation, regional concerns, and measures to consolidate regional security and stability. According to al-Zaidi, Iraq and Iran have a deep connection rooted in their shared history, culture, geographic closeness, and mutual interests. This relationship highlights the importance of dialogue and collaboration in achieving sustainable development for both countries and fostering stability in the region. The discussions reportedly centered on economic agreements, especially concerning essential shared resources like gas supplies and the declining water flows in the Tigris and Euphrates rivers. The Iraqi delegation underscored that Iraq will stay unbiased and neutral in any foreign tensions between Tehran and Washington. This visit takes place after al-Zaidi met with US President Donald Trump in Washington, where they inked several trade and economic deals worth billions of dollars. Following his visit to Tehran, al-Zaidi is expected to continue his regional tour, stopping in Turkey and Saudi Arabia to discuss bilateral cooperation.
