Nechirvan Barzani meets with Iranian leaders during Tehran visit
Baghdad (IraqiNews.com) — Iraq’s Kurdistan Region President Nechirvan Barzani arrived in Tehran to attend the burial rites of the former Iranian Supreme Leader Ali Khamenei.
Barzani also had a series of talks with key Iranian authorities to discuss regional events and bilateral relations.
In a pre-funeral meeting, Barzani met with Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi, and the two sides discussed recent regional events and subjects of mutual concern.
Barzani also met with Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian, with both sides discussing how to boost relations between Iran, Iraq and the Kurdistan Region, notably in trade, economic cooperation and border connections.
The two parties noted the historical, cultural, and economic linkages that unite Iraq and Iran, and discussed potential for expanding collaboration and boosting bilateral relations.
During the visit, Barzani also had meetings with Iranian Parliament Speaker Mohammad Bagher Ghalibaf.
Barzani hailed Ghalibaf’s involvement in advancing the recent Iran-U.S. agreement and highlighted the need of continuing discussion and engagement to secure the deal’s implementation.
Barzani’s trip coincides with the presence of other top Iraqi leaders, including Iraq’s President Nizar Amedi and Parliament Speaker Hebat Al-Halbousi, at the funeral events in Tehran.
The discussions highlight the tight political, economic, and topographical links between Iraq and Iran and the significance Baghdad and Erbil focus on regional diplomacy and stability after recent tensions in the area.
