The United States is marking the 250th anniversary of its independence this weekend, with official ceremonies, public exhibitions, fireworks, naturalization events and large-scale civic celebrations planned across the country.
The anniversary commemorates the adoption of the Declaration of Independence on July 4, 1776, when the American colonies declared separation from Great Britain. Although the actual Independence Day falls on Saturday, July 4, the federal holiday is being observed on Friday, July 3, according to the U.S. Office of Personnel Management.
The milestone, widely known as America’s semiquincentennial, has been coordinated through several federal, state and civic initiatives. America250, a bipartisan national initiative, says July 4, 2026, marks the 250th anniversary of the Declaration of Independence and has worked with public institutions, states, territories and community partners to organize commemorative programs.
The White House has also made the anniversary a major national event. A 2025 executive order said it was U.S. policy to provide a “grand celebration” for the 250th anniversary of American independence, while the White House Freedom 250 program describes July 4, 2026, as 250 years of American independence.
In Washington, D.C., the National Archives is holding a July 4 program near the original Declaration of Independence, including historical reenactors, a public reading of the Declaration, family activities and extended exhibition hours. The National Archives said the ceremony continues a Fourth of July tradition it has held for more than 50 years.

The National Park Service has listed several signature anniversary events across the country, including the Great American State Fair on the National Mall, Rushmore 250 at Mount Rushmore, Sail 4th 250, and the Salute to America celebration and fireworks in Washington. The events are part of a wider program at national parks and historic sites tied to the country’s founding history.
President Donald Trump is expected to attend anniversary events at Mount Rushmore in South Dakota, where Reuters reported he is scheduled to deliver a keynote speech and attend a fireworks display before a larger celebration in Washington. The event has drawn attention because fireworks at Mount Rushmore have previously raised environmental and fire-risk concerns, though officials have moved ahead with this year’s program.
New York is preparing one of the most visible public showcases through Sail4th 250, an international maritime celebration featuring tall ships and government vessels. Organizers describe the event as a high-profile international project marking the country’s 250th birthday, while Governors Island said the July 4 program will include what it described as the largest-ever flotilla of tall ships from around the world.
New York will also host Macy’s Fourth of July Fireworks, one of the country’s best-known Independence Day events. According to Associated Press reporting carried by ABC News, this year’s show will mark America’s 250th birthday with about 85,000 shells in 30 colors fired from six barges, alongside performances by major U.S. artists.
Major cultural institutions are using the anniversary to present American history through exhibitions and public education. The Smithsonian’s National Museum of American History is hosting “In Pursuit of Life, Liberty & Happiness,” a museum-wide exhibition featuring 250 objects across 250,000 square feet, including artifacts connected to the founding era and later periods of American life.
The Library of Congress is also holding America 250 programs, including a Declaration of Independence Family Day on July 4 at the Thomas Jefferson Building. The library said the event includes activities for families and visitors marking 250 years since the adoption of the Declaration.

At Monticello in Virginia, the historic home of Thomas Jefferson, the anniversary will be marked with an Independence Day celebration and naturalization ceremony. Organizers said Monticello’s West Lawn will become an outdoor courtroom where dozens of people are expected to take the oath of U.S. citizenship.
The anniversary is being celebrated at a time when Americans hold varied views about the country’s direction and the meaning of patriotism. Reuters reported that many people plan to mark the holiday with traditional gatherings, parades and barbecues, while public sentiment about the milestone varies across the country.
For a global audience, the 250th anniversary represents more than a national holiday. It is a moment of historical reflection for a country whose political system, economy, military power, culture, technology and immigration story have shaped international affairs for much of the modern era.
