Ski mountaineering officially confirmed for the 2030 Winter Olympics

Ski mountaineering will remain on the Olympic programme after the International Olympic Committee (IOC) officially confirmed its inclusion in the Olympic Winter Games French Alps 2030. The decision, approved during the IOC Session on 25 June, follows the sport’s Olympic debut at the Milano Cortina 2026 Winter Games and marks another major milestone in the rapid growth of ski mountaineering. The French Alps 2030 programme will feature five medal events across the Sprint, Individual and Mixed Relay disciplines, cementing the sport’s place within the Olympic Movement. The inclusion follows a recommendation by the IOC Executive Board based on a proposal from the French Alps 2030 Organising Committee, which was reviewed by the IOC Olympic Programme Working Group. Ahead of the vote, French athlete Emily Harrop addressed IOC members, delivering an emotional speech highlighting the values of ski mountaineering and the significance of Olympic recognition for athletes and the wider mountain community. ISMF President Regula Meier welcomed the decision, describing it as “a proud moment for everyone involved in ski mountaineering.” “Having our sport confirmed for the Olympic Winter Games French Alps 2030 is a significant milestone for our entire community,” Meier said. She thanked the IOC members, the French Alps 2030 Organising Committee and the International Ski Mountaineering Federation’s national member federations for their support throughout the process. Meier also praised Emily Harrop’s address, saying it successfully conveyed the voice and passion of the sport’s athletes. The ISMF president highlighted the contribution of the French Federation of Mountaineering and Climbing (FFME), the IOC Olympic Programme Working Group and the IOC Sports Department, as well as the athletes, officials, volunteers and partners who have helped guide ski mountaineering’s Olympic journey. The IOC’s decision is seen as recognition of ski mountaineering’s growing international profile and confirms its long-term Olympic future.
