Catalan Government allocates €867,000 to study a tram corridor between La Seu d’Urgell and Andorra

The Government of Catalonia has launched a tender worth €867,000 for a feasibility study of a new tram corridor linking La Seu d’Urgell and Andorra. The proposed 20-kilometre cross-border infrastructure is estimated to require an investment of €250 million. The project forms part of the Catalan Government’s (Spain) broader strategy to expand public transport and develop a network of tram-train services across the region. Catalonia’s Minister for Territory, Sílvia Paneque, said the initiative is particularly significant because of its cross-border nature, adding that it aims to “improve the connection between Catalonia and Andorra while promoting sustainable, low-carbon public transport.” The feasibility study will assess the technical, operational and economic viability of a dedicated tram corridor running separately from the existing road network between the capital of Alt Urgell and the Principality of Andorra. It will also examine the possibility of building a parallel cycling route, particularly in urban and suburban sections, as well as a branch line connecting the corridor with Andorra–La Seu d’Urgell Airport. The proposed route would be approximately 20 kilometres long and include at least five stops. The study is expected to be completed within one year. It will examine the section between La Seu d’Urgell and Escaldes-Engordany, although the infrastructure designed by the Catalan Government will extend only to the border, where it is intended to connect with the railway project currently being developed by the Government of Andorra. The tram corridor is one of several initiatives included in the Catalan Government’s long-term strategy to strengthen public transport infrastructure, with a particular focus on expanding the use of tram-train systems in cooperation with local authorities, transport organisations and other stakeholders. The post Catalan Government allocates €867,000 to study a tram corridor between La Seu d’Urgell and Andorra first appeared on All PYRENEES.
