Sport Holds Key to Botswana’s Economic Transformation

Sunday Standard Sport Holds Key to Botswana’s Economic Transformation Sport should no longer be viewed only as recreation or competition. It is a strategic economic sector capable of creating jobs, attracting investment and driving national development. These were the words of Minister of Sport and Arts Jacob Kelebeng at the inaugural Business of Sport Summit held last week. The summit was held under the theme, “Economic Transformation Through Sport: The Role of Sport in Botswana’s Economic Transformation Programme.” Kelebeng said Botswana has reached a point where sport must be fully embraced as a business industry with the potential to transform the country’s economy. He added that many countries had already demonstrated that sport is a thriving economic sector, and Botswana should position itself to benefit from the same opportunities. In Botswana, discussions around sport have traditionally focused on participation, talent development and winning competitions. While these remain important, the minister said equal attention must now be given to the commercial side of sport. He explained that sport creates employment, supports entrepreneurs, attracts investment and stimulates growth across various industries. “Every sporting event creates economic activity. Every athlete creates demand for goods and services. Sports facilities support jobs, while successful sporting brands create commercial opportunities,” he said. Kelebeng pointed to Botswana’s sporting achievements and the successful hosting of the World Athletics Relays in Gaborone as evidence that the country has the capacity to benefit economically from major sporting events. The event generated business for hotels, transport operators, restaurants, retailers and entertainment businesses, while creating employment opportunities and showcasing Botswana as both a tourism and sporting destination. These outcomes demonstrate that sport can become a significant contributor to the national economy if supported by deliberate investment and sound policies. With this in mind, the government is committed to positioning Botswana as a regional hub for international sporting events. “As the Ministry of Sport, we recognise our responsibility to create an environment where sport can grow both as a social asset and as an economic sector.”  Kelebeng however said building a successful sports economy will require strong partnerships between government, the private sector, investors and sporting organisations. He challenged the corporate sector to view sponsorship not as an expense, but as a long-term investment that delivers returns through economic growth, brand visibility and community development. The minister encouraged financial institutions, developers, entrepreneurs and investors to play a more active role in growing Botswana’s sports economy. He added that innovation, collaboration and commitment from all stakeholders will be critical to unlocking the full potential of sport. Minister Kelebeng said Botswana already has a strong foundation to become a leader in the business of sport, but achieving that vision will require bold decisions and practical action. He expressed hope that the Business of Sport Summit would mark a turning point in changing perceptions of sport, not only as a source of entertainment, but also as a powerful driver of jobs, investment and economic prosperity. The summit brought together government officials, business leaders, investors, sports administrators and members of the media to explore how sport can contribute to economic growth.
