Tropical Night Hits Large Parts of Czechia, Prague Sees Warmest Conditions

Around one fifth of Czech weather stations recorded a tropical night from Friday into Saturday, with temperatures staying above 20 degrees Celsius until morning, the Czech Hydrometeorological Institute has said. Meteorologists say that a tropical night is recorded when the temperature does not fall below 20 degrees Celsius. On Saturday night, this threshold was reached at roughly one fifth of all measuring stations across the country. According to data from the Czech Hydrometeorological Institute (ČHMÚ), the phenomenon was observed nationwide, affecting lowland areas, higher elevations and even some mountainous locations, as well as major cities. In Prague, the warmest conditions were recorded in the city centre. At the Praha-Klementinum station, the temperature stayed above 23.7 degrees Celsius throughout the night, the ČHMÚ reported on Facebook. While the current conditions are notable, the highest recorded nighttime temperature in Czech history dates back to 8 August 2013 in Bystřice pod Hostýnem, where 27.2 degrees Celsius was measured. Forecasts suggest that warm nights will continue. On Sunday night, temperatures are expected to remain between 18 and 23 degrees Celsius, with little cooling after sunset. Meteorologists also warn that Monday could bring the highest concentration of tropical nights, as a partly cloudy sky associated with an approaching cold front may trap heat across the country. Night temperatures are expected to range between 19 and 24 degrees Celsius. Under specific conditions, the historic record from 2013 could be approached. Alongside the warm nights, a warning for extreme daytime heat remains active in Prague, where temperatures may exceed 37 degrees Celsius. Such conditions place significant stress on the human body and increase the risk of dehydration and overheating.
