Diplomatic Triumph in New York: Austria Joins the UN Security Council
There was great jubilation and relief on Wednesday evening at the United Nations headquarters in New York: In a closely contested vote by the UN General Assembly, Austria secured one of the coveted non-permanent seats on the UN Security Council for the 2027–2028 term. In the secret ballot, the Alpine republic surprisingly and decisively outpaced its neighbor Germany, thereby joining the world’s most powerful security body for the fourth time starting next year.
