International News: Mexican authorities investigate case of Mayor killed in Oaxaca

By Zoila Palma:  Mexican authorities have launched an investigation into the killing of Joel Bravo Martínez, the mayor of San Miguel Amatitlán in Oaxaca state, in the latest case of political violence in the country, AP reports. Bravo Martínez was shot and killed on Saturday, weeks after he reportedly expressed fears for his safety and requested protection from the state government, according to a statement from his political party, PAN. The Oaxaca state prosecutor’s office said it immediately activated protocols used in investigations of high-impact crimes after learning of the homicide. Mexico’s Security Cabinet also announced that it is working alongside state authorities to investigate the killing and identify those responsible. Additional security forces have been deployed to the area as part of the response. In a statement posted on social media, the Security Cabinet vowed that those responsible would be brought to justice, declaring that “there will not be impunity.” The killing adds to a growing list of attacks against local politicians in Mexico, who are often targeted amid political and organized crime-related violence. The homicide comes as Mexico seeks to present itself as a safe destination while co-hosting the World Cup with the United States and Canada. President Claudia Sheinbaum has said the country has a comprehensive security plan in place for the tournament, including enhanced training, operational exercises, early warning systems, and security measures around stadiums, airports, roads, and hotels.
