Australia Welcomes U.S.-Iran Agreement, Urges Continued Dialogue

Australia has welcomed the agreement reached between Iran and the United States and called on both sides to continue pursuing dialogue and diplomacy to achieve a lasting peace. Al Jazeera reported on Monday that Australian Prime Minister Anthony Albanese and Foreign Minister Penny Wong emphasized the importance of restraint and constructive engagement in a joint statement issued following the announcement of the agreement. The statement said continued talks between Tehran and Washington could help secure a durable settlement and prevent further escalation of tensions in the Middle East. Australian officials also welcomed provisions aimed at reopening the Strait of Hormuz and restoring freedom of navigation through one of the world’s most important maritime trade routes. Canberra further expressed appreciation for Pakistan’s role in helping facilitate the agreement and praised efforts to reduce regional tensions through diplomatic engagement. Australia said it remains supportive of initiatives that promote regional stability and encourage the peaceful resolution of disputes through dialogue. The U.S.-Iran agreement has been widely welcomed by governments and international organizations as a significant diplomatic breakthrough following months of conflict and heightened tensions across the Middle East. The framework includes a ceasefire, the reopening of the Strait of Hormuz and a process for further negotiations between Washington and Tehran. Reuters reported that the agreement establishes a 60-day period for negotiations on broader issues, including sanctions relief, regional security arrangements and Iran’s nuclear programme. A memorandum of understanding is expected to be formally signed in Switzerland later this week. The reopening of the Strait of Hormuz is considered one of the most important elements of the agreement. The strategic waterway handles a substantial share of global oil and gas shipments, and disruptions there have contributed to concerns over energy supplies and volatility in international markets.
