Pakistan Says U.S.-Iran Deal Marks Major Diplomatic Breakthrough
Pakistan’s Foreign Minister Ishaq Dar has welcomed the agreement reached between the United States and Iran, describing it as a significant diplomatic achievement and a positive development for regional and global stability.
In a statement posted on X on Monday, Dar said the agreement reflected sustained diplomatic engagement and the collective determination of all parties to choose dialogue over confrontation.
He said the breakthrough sends a reassuring message to the international community at a time of heightened geopolitical tensions and economic uncertainty.
According to Dar, the agreement could help provide the confidence and stability needed for global markets and the international economy, particularly for developing countries that are vulnerable to energy price fluctuations and regional instability.
“While negotiations on the remaining issues continue, Pakistan stands ready to support all efforts aimed at consolidating this progress,” Dar said.
The foreign minister also expressed hope that the formal signing ceremony for the agreement would take place as planned in Geneva on June 19.
Pakistan has been widely credited as one of several countries that helped facilitate contacts between Washington and Tehran during the negotiations, alongside regional actors including Qatar, Saudi Arabia and Turkey.
The agreement between the United States and Iran follows months of conflict and rising tensions that raised concerns about a broader regional confrontation. The framework announced by both sides includes a ceasefire, the reopening of the Strait of Hormuz and a process for further negotiations on unresolved political and security issues.
Reuters reported that the agreement establishes a 60-day period during which Washington and Tehran will negotiate a broader settlement covering sanctions relief, regional security concerns and Iran’s nuclear programme. The framework is expected to be formalized through a memorandum of understanding scheduled to be signed in Switzerland later this week.
The reopening of the Strait of Hormuz is regarded as one of the most significant aspects of the agreement. The strategic waterway carries a substantial portion of global oil and gas exports, and disruptions there in recent months contributed to higher energy prices and concerns about global supply chains. Markets responded positively to news of the breakthrough, with oil prices falling following the announcement.
