Congo Reports 72 New Ebola Infections as Outbreak Expands to New Health Zones

The Democratic Republic of Congo has recorded 72 new confirmed Ebola cases over the past 24 hours, bringing the total number of infections in the current outbreak to 782, according to official government data. Health authorities said 181 people have died from the virus since the outbreak began, underscoring the continuing public health challenge facing the country. Official figures show that the outbreak remains concentrated in three eastern provinces; Ituri, North Kivu and South Kivu — which have experienced repeated Ebola outbreaks and other health emergencies in recent years. However, authorities reported that confirmed cases have now been detected for the first time in the Niania health zone in Ituri province and the Mabalako health zone in North Kivu, raising concerns about the geographic spread of the disease. Public health officials continue to monitor transmission patterns and carry out response measures aimed at containing the outbreak, including surveillance, contact tracing and treatment efforts in affected communities. The latest figures suggest that transmission remains active despite ongoing containment measures, with health authorities seeking to prevent the virus from spreading beyond the affected areas. The Democratic Republic of Congo has experienced multiple Ebola outbreaks over the past several decades, making it one of the countries most affected by the disease. Previous outbreaks have often occurred in remote regions with limited healthcare infrastructure, complicating efforts to contain transmission and provide treatment. Ebola is a severe and often fatal viral disease that spreads through direct contact with infected bodily fluids or contaminated materials. Symptoms can include fever, fatigue, vomiting, diarrhea and internal bleeding. Rapid detection, isolation of cases and contact tracing are considered critical tools in controlling outbreaks. Eastern Congo faces additional challenges in responding to public health emergencies because of long-running insecurity and armed conflict. Violence and population displacement in parts of Ituri and North Kivu have at times hindered access for healthcare workers and disrupted disease surveillance efforts. International health organizations have repeatedly warned that outbreaks in conflict-affected areas can be more difficult to contain due to population movements, limited medical services and mistrust of authorities.
