Qatar Welcomes U.S.-Iran Deal

Qatar has welcomed the memorandum of understanding reached between the United States and Iran, describing it as an important step toward lasting peace and economic growth at both the regional and global levels. In a statement issued on Monday, Qatar’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs said the agreement, including provisions aimed at ensuring freedom of navigation through the Strait of Hormuz, represented a significant development in efforts to strengthen regional stability and support international economic activity. The ministry also praised the commitment shown by Washington and Tehran to resolve their differences through dialogue and peaceful negotiations, emphasizing the importance of diplomatic solutions to regional disputes. Qatar expressed appreciation for the efforts of Pakistan and other regional and international actors that contributed to reducing tensions and bringing the two sides closer to an agreement. The Gulf state reiterated its support for initiatives aimed at promoting regional security and stability, stressing that sustainable solutions can only be achieved through dialogue, diplomacy and cooperation among concerned parties. The statement comes after the United States and Iran announced a preliminary framework agreement intended to end months of conflict and open the way for broader negotiations on sanctions relief, regional security issues and Iran’s nuclear programme. Reuters reported on Monday that the framework includes plans to reopen the Strait of Hormuz, a critical route for global energy supplies, and establish a 60-day ceasefire period during which both sides will negotiate a more comprehensive agreement. The memorandum of understanding is expected to be formally signed in Switzerland later this week. The U.S.-Iran agreement follows months of conflict that disrupted regional stability and affected global energy markets. The Strait of Hormuz, through which a significant share of the world’s oil and gas exports passes, became a focal point of the crisis after shipping disruptions raised concerns about energy supplies and international trade. The future of Iran’s nuclear activities is expected to remain a central topic in upcoming talks. Western governments have repeatedly stated that Iran must not acquire a nuclear weapon, while Iranian officials maintain that the country’s nuclear programme is intended for peaceful purposes.
