Building the Trans-Zangezur Agro-Tech Corridor and Azerbaijan’s New Agricultural Revolution with the Geopolitical Significance of Nakhchivan and the Zangezur Corridor
Zoltan Sztuchlik, president/partner of iCsquared GmbH, Bruno Ciroussel, CEO of AiTEK FACTORY/ASC Group and Ayaz Bayramov, CEO of iCsquared GmbH
As global supply chains shift toward resilient middle corridors, the Caucasus is emerging not just as an energy and logistics hub, but as an agro-industrial and clean-tech powerhouse. At the center of this structural renaissance is Azerbaijan, where recent high-level state decrees signed by President of Azerbaijan Ilham Aliyev have officially announced a “new era” in the agrarian sector.
To understand how international venture capital, Swiss-American technology, and regional geopolitics are merging on the ground, we sat down with Ayaz Bayramov, CEO of the Swiss iCsquared GmbH, Coordinator of the prestigious WASSERSTEIN Swiss-American-British-Azerbaijan Alliance, and CIS & GCC Regional Director of the Swiss Alliance for Multilateral Economic Cooperation (AMEC).
He outlines the grand vision for a national agro-ecosystem, the deployment of advanced Artificial Intelligence (AI) solutions, the integration of the strategic Zangezur Corridor under the US-supported TRIPP Initiative, and a groundbreaking initiative to transition Nakhchivan’s ancient Duzdagh (Salt Mountain) mineral reserves into the global green energy supply chain.
Your recent insights published in Japanese media described President Ilham Aliyev’s strategic agricultural directives as the launchpad for an entirely new economic epoch. How is the Wasserstein Alliance translating this vision into commercial reality?
President of Azerbaijan Ilham Aliyev’s recent strategic meetings on new development trends and visions on agriculture have established a definitive mandate: Azerbaijan must transition from traditional, low-yield farming to a high-tech, export-oriented, climate-resilient agro-industrial model. At the WASSERSTEIN Alliance, we recognized this potential early on.
Crucially, our operations do not exist in a vacuum; Icquared GmbH acts under the explicit bilateral framework and legal mandate derived from the Official Protocol of the 9th Session of the Joint Economic Commission between Switzerland and the Republic of Azerbaijan. Under the direct monitoring and structured coordination of AZPROMO (Azerbaijan Export and Investment Promotion Agency), the Ministry of Economy, and the Ministry of Agriculture, we have institutionalized this intergovernmental mandate on the ground.
We have successfully acclimated premium US-sourced green asparagus F1 genetic seed structures – originally developed in New Jersey and fully registered with Azerbaijan’s Agricultural Services Agency – into local soil profiles. What we are building now is a comprehensive, vertically integrated National Asparagus and Peanut Agro-Ecosystem backed by Swiss, American, and European private equity, paired with soft financing from the Azerbaijan Business Development Fund.
Can you break down the operational mechanics of this mega-project? We understand it spans multiple regions, with a heavy emphasis on Aghstafa region and the Nakhchivan Autonomous Republic.
Precision agriculture requires empirical patience followed by aggressive scaling. In the asparagus sector, our foundational plantation in the Aghstafa region is already entering its 4th successful biological year, with its premium yield already capturing the high-end retail markets of Baku.
Our immediate roadmap focuses on establishing a 200-hectare Asparagus Cluster in Aghstafa, anchored by a state-of-the-art industrial processing, canning, and Individual Quick Freezing (IQF) facility engineered with cutting-edge German and Dutch technologies. To scale this to global standards, we are currently in advanced commercial negotiations with one of Azerbaijan’s premier agro-holding conglomerates, to develop an additional 500 hectares of coordinated asparagus fields across key regions like Shamkir and Absheron. This partnership will expand the processing plant’s output capacity by 2 to 3 times.
Furthermore, we are driving digital inclusion. Through a newly established technological syndicate, our American partner Copernicus IP LLC is collaborating with the premier European technology firm Aitek Factory to deploy advanced AI solutions into our precision agriculture platforms. This AI infrastructure processes big data from satellite imagery and agro-drones to automate drip-irrigation networks, trace crop health matrixes, and map climate variances in real-time.
There is an upcoming agricultural public-private discussions meeting in Sharur on June 22. What specific role does Nakhchivan play in your alliance’s master plan?
Nakhchivan holds a pristine, strategically vital microclimate that is unparalleled for premium cash crops. Following successful multi-year experimental trials initiated back in the 2023 season under the guidance of the Ministry of Economy in the villages of Zeyve (Sharur) and Khok (Kangarli), where we successfully field-tested peanut and alternative crop varieties, we are significantly expanding our footprint.
This rapid development has been highly accelerated by the progressive administrative and economic reforms implemented by Mr. Jeyhun Jalilov, Plenipotentiary Representative of the President of the Republic of Azerbaijan in the Nakhchivan Autonomous Republic, following his appointment by President Ilham Aliyev in 2025. Mr. Jalilov’s focus on modernizing the agrarian infrastructure has created a frictionless environment for foreign direct investment (FDI).
Our current execution plan in Nakhchivan consists of the following foundational pillars:
The Asparagus Express: We are establishing a 20-hectare high-tech asparagus plantation located strategically near the Nakhchivan International Airport with continuous water access and advanced automated drip-irrigation. The harvest methodology is revolutionary: the asparagus will be harvested in Nakhchivan at dawn, immediately transferred via air-freight to our Aghstafa hub for IQF processing, and packaged for immediate global export. To sustain this high-speed logistics cold chain, our alliance is structuring a dedicated lease for 5-ton capacity cargo aircraft to seamlessly bridge Nakhchivan’s yields with our international distribution networks. This logistics model directly leverages the historic Presidential Decree № 72713, which provides direct state transport subsidies to local entrepreneurs, drastically reducing air and land freight overheads.
The Specialized Crop Portfolio: Alongside the staples, we are deploying targeted experimental plots in Nakhchivan, including premium Broccoli (1 ha), Ginger (1 ha), Artichoke (1 ha), Chandler Walnut orchards (1 ha), controlled-atmosphere Vanilla greenhouses (0.1 ha), Blue Agave for medical and premium beverage applications (0.1 ha), and perennial decorative peanuts for sustainable urban landscaping (0.5 ha).
A key component of long-term sustainability is local human capital. How is the alliance addressing knowledge transfer in Nakhchivan?
We believe that sustainable development must be anchored in the local community. To achieve this, we are currently in advanced negotiations with the Islamic Development Bank (IDB) to secure a dedicated grant project for the establishment of the “Varmaziyar Training and Development Center” in the Varmaziyar Village of the Sharur region.
This landmark center, engineered under green building principles utilizing on-site wind and solar energy grids, will feature dedicated automated computer laboratories, language training centers, and a 1-hectare specialized research and seed-breeding plot. The goal is to provide local partner farmers (LOPAFA) and local partner women farmers (LOPAWFA) with top-tier certifications in AI-driven precision farming, while collaborating with the scientists of Nakhchivan State University to achieve complete regional seed localization and bio-sustainability.
Your alliance has planned a massive 4,000-hectare peanut cultivation network. How does Nakhchivan fit into this, and what is this intriguing connection between the ancient Duzdagh Salt Mountain and the global tech sector?
Our macroeconomic blueprint dictates a 4,000-hectare peanut plantation framework across Azerbaijan, distributed strategically: 1,000 hectares in Karabakh, 1,000 hectares in Eastern Zangezur, 500 hectares in Aghstafa, 1,000 hectares across other key regions, and a critical 500 hectares inside Nakhchivan. Based on structural soil assessments by leading Argentine peanut agronomic experts, Nakhchivan’s 500 hectares will be divided into two diversified 250-hectare zones to mitigate localized climate risks. These fields will mainly utilize automated European pivot irrigation systems.
The primary industrial processing facility for this peanut empire will be strategically situated within the “Araz Valley Economic Zone” Industrial Park in Jabrayil, utilizing state-of-the-art Swiss, German, and US processing machinery. The total national investment value of the peanut infrastructure stands at $20-25 million, with Nakhchivan directly absorbing approximately $1.2-2.0 million of this allocation.
Our commercial retail roadmap includes packing premium roasted peanuts—seasoned exclusively with Nakhchivan’s famous organic mineral rock salt—into customized tin cans for direct supply to Europe’s largest retail syndicates, such as Coop and Migros in Switzerland, and Intersnack AG in Germany.
However, our vision for Nakhchivan’s mineral wealth goes far beyond culinary applications. Utilizing the international multi-sector platform of AMEC, we have initiated high-level negotiations with global tech conglomerates and hyperscale energy investors to utilize the massive raw material reserves of the Nakhchivan Duzdagh (Salt Mountain) deposit for the future production of Sodium-Ion (Na-Ion) Batteries. As the global EV and renewable storage industries look for alternatives to lithium, Nakhchivan’s rich, high-purity sodium chemical structures present a multi-billion-dollar opportunity to supply raw materials for next-generation solid-state batteries to Western tech markets.
To move agricultural cargo to European retailers and raw minerals to global tech manufacturing hubs, transit logistics are vital. How does the opening of the Zangazur Corridor alter the economic landscape of the region?
The opening of the Zangezur Corridor is the crown jewel of our transit strategy, serving as a vital link under the broader TRIPP framework, which receives significant strategic support from the United States and the European Union.
To make our high-volume organic exports to European supermarkets commercially viable, transit times and international logistics costs must be slashed. The Zangezur Corridor will provide an uninterrupted, direct rail and high-speed highway overland link connecting Nakhchivan across mainland Azerbaijan directly into Türkiye and Europe.
By bypassing restrictive international borders and legacy transit bottlenecks, this corridor effectively transforms Nakhchivan from a logistically restricted landlocked zone into a hyper-connected, primary land-port on the modern Silk Road. It creates a seamless, legally secure transit link that allows a container loaded in Nakhchivan or the Araz Valley Free Zone to reach Central Europe via rail in record time.
Within this framework, the American technology dimension becomes a strategic differentiator. Through Copernicus IP LLC and Aitek Factory in the United States, in coordination with ASC Group SL in Andorra, the alliance can position Aitek 8 as a sovereign artificial intelligence technology layer for TRIPP-related agro-tech, logistics, cloud, and strategic infrastructure. Aitek 8 is not simply a software component; it is an operational intelligence framework designed to structure data, supervise processes, support installation and training, and reinforce decision-making across agriculture, transport, energy, telecommunications, and public-sector coordination. This US-Andorran technological bridge strengthens the credibility of the TRIPP vision by connecting American innovation, sovereign cloud architecture, and practical regional deployment.
As you prepare to present this massive framework at the upcoming high-level Sharur Discussions on June 22, what will be your core policy proposal for the region?
During the discussions on the 22nd June which will be organized in Sharur, ignited directly by President Aliyev’s national agricultural master plan, I will initiate a major global initiative: the annual establishment of the Nakhchivan International Agricultural Forum which may be jointly organized annually by AMEC and Ministry of Agriculture.
Our goal is to leverage the institutional weight of AMEC and the Wasserstein Alliance to turn Nakhchivan into a recurring annual summit where global venture capitalists, hyperscale agro-tech firms, and international financial institutions (IFIs) gather to invest in the region’s green transition.
Azerbaijan is proving that when clear state vision, bold administrative reforms under President Aliyev’s Plenipotentiary Representative like Jeyhun Jalilov, and structured private alliances meet, the results are revolutionary. Backed by substantive law and international corporate governance, the Trans-Zangezur Agro-Tech Corridor is opening, and the future of sustainable European food and tech-resource security is being actively built right now.
Azerbaijan will open new horizon to be in a central pillar having bold access to global “green gold” and become one of the leading global agro-tech hubs. The post Building the Trans-Zangezur Agro-Tech Corridor and Azerbaijan’s New Agricultural Revolution with the Geopolitical Significance of Nakhchivan and the Zangezur Corridor first appeared on All PYRENEES.
