UN condemns deadly Quetta train bombing as Pakistan mourns victims
United Nations condemned the deadly bombing targeting a passenger train in Quetta, with the spokesman for Secretary-General Stéphane Dujarric saying terrorism in all forms is unacceptable.
Dujarric said the UN chief called for those responsible for the attack to be identified and brought to justice, while expressing solidarity with the people and government of Pakistan.
A suicide bombing involving a vehicle packed with explosives struck a train carrying soldiers in Quetta, the capital of Balochistan, on Sunday, killing at least 24 people and injuring more than 50 others.
Baloch Liberation Army claimed responsibility for the attack, according to regional media reports. Pakistani media said most of the victims were civilians, including passengers, pedestrians and residents living near the railway line, while at least three border police officers were also killed.
Images circulating on social media showed burned train carriages, damaged vehicles and thick black smoke rising above the blast site as emergency teams rushed injured victims to hospitals.
Sarfaraz Bugti condemned the attack and accused militants of targeting innocent civilians, while the Taliban also denounced the bombing.
Pakistan has witnessed a surge in militant violence in recent months, particularly in Balochistan and Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, where security forces and armed groups have repeatedly clashed.
Just days before the Quetta bombing, at least 29 people were reported killed during clashes between Pakistani security forces and militants in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, highlighting worsening security concerns across the country.
