Clash of Legends Scores Big with P1.5 Million Betway Backing
The Clash of Legends football tournament is entering a new era. Betway Botswana has committed P1.5 million towards the growth of the competition, which is geared towards the improvement of the welfare of retired football players.
Betway Botswana’s cash injection is one of the biggest investments into a legends football event in the country. It is expected to elevate the tournament into a larger regional attraction while strengthening its charitable mission of supporting former football stars.
Under the new name of Betway Clash of the Legends Football Tournament, the event is now expected to grow beyond football entertainment. It now evolves into a platform focused on preserving football heritage and restoring dignity to retired players, who once carried the hopes of supporters across the country and the region.
This year’s edition will feature legends from two Botswana Premier league giants, Township Rollers and Mochudi Centre Chiefs as well as two South African giants, Kaizer Chiefs and Orlando Pirates.
For past three years, legends football matches have provided fans with moments of nostalgia, reconnecting supporters with players who defined different eras of the game. But behind the celebrations and memories, many former footballers continue to face difficult realities after retirement, including financial struggles and limited support systems.
That social challenge has become one of the driving forces behind the Clash of Legends project. Michelle France-Mabiletsa said Betway’s involvement is not only about sponsoring football, but about investing in people and recognising the contribution former players made to the sport.
“At Betway, our passion for sports is not just about the game on the pitch. It is about the community, the history and the heroes who shaped the beautiful game,” she said.
France-Mabiletsa noted that many former football stars are often forgotten after retirement despite the joy and pride they once brought to supporters.
“We have seen the harsh reality that many football icons face after hanging up their boots. Some of the very men who made us proud on the field struggle in silence during their post-career years,” she said.
She said the company believes the tournament provides an important platform to help former players while also giving supporters an opportunity to reconnect with football history.
Through the sponsorship, Betway hopes to improve the overall standard of the event, attract more supporters and ensure that retired players are celebrated on a bigger stage.
“Through this investment, we want to give our football legends the grand stage they deserve while giving supporters an unforgettable football experience,” she said.
The tournament’s organisers say the event was created not only to celebrate football legends but also to provide direct assistance to former players in need.Funds generated through ticket sales, sponsorships and other tournament activities are expected to contribute towards supporting retired footballers facing challenges after their careers.
France-Mabiletsa said the sponsorship represents a commitment to honouring former players and ensuring they are not forgotten by the football community.
“This sponsorship is our way of saying we see you, we remember you and we will not forget your contribution,” she said.Clash of Legends coordinator Sekhana ‘Nandos’ Koko described the partnership as a major turning point for the tournament.
“This partnership gives us the opportunity to grow the tournament into something bigger while continuing to support former football players who need assistance. It is about protecting the legacy of our legends and making sure they continue to feel valued even after football,” said Koko.
Beyond the football itself, organisers believe the tournament is becoming an important community event that combines entertainment with social impact.Supporters attending the matches will not only witness former stars back on the pitch, but will also contribute towards improving the lives of football legends who once inspired the nation.
