2006 Facelift
In 2006, the SL was updated and unveiled at the Geneva Motor Show. The updates included new engines for the SL 350 and SL 500 (known as the SL 550 in North America), performance enhancements for the SL 55 AMG and SL 600, and the introduction of a new top-of-the-range model, the SL 65 AMG. The ABC (Active Body Control) system reduced body roll during dynamic driving by 60% and became standard on all models except the SL 350. The new engines had a new 7-speed 7G-Tronic automatic gearbox and a Sport option, allowing for quicker gear changes in manual mode.
Externally, the car received a new bumper with three large air intakes and a pronounced V-shape, fog lights with chrome surrounds, new alloy wheels and rear lights. Inside, there is softer leather upholstery, new trim colours, high-quality metal sill plates bearing the Mercedes-Benz logo and embossed aluminium elements, a removable boot lid with optional remote opening, and a redesigned roof opening mechanism that reduces the time taken to 16 seconds.
2008 Facelift
In March 2008, the car received another update. Its front end took on a more aggressive look. The power output of the 3.5-litre V6 increased to 307 HP at 6,500 rpm, which was 16 per cent more than the previous model. Torque also rose to 360 N·m, and the engine could now rev up to 7,200 rpm under certain conditions thanks to a higher compression ratio, a new intake manifold and modifications to the valve train.
Mercedes-Benz expanded the SL-Class range by adding the entry-level SL 280 model with 228 HP. The six-cylinder engine produced a maximum torque of 300 N·m at 2,500 rpm and accelerated the roadster to 100 km/h in 7.8 seconds with a fuel consumption of 9.4 l/100 km. It had the AIRSCARF heating system, also used in the SLK.
