Alfa Romeo 33
Alfa Romeo 33 (Type 905/907)
Alfa Romeo 33 at Arkhangelskoye Estate (Moscow Region, Russia)
The Alfa Romeo 33 was a compact family car produced by the Italian company Alfa Romeo from 1983 to 1995. In terms of design, it was an evolution of its predecessor, the Alfasud. This model retained the platform, chassis and transmission, but the suspension and braking system were simplified.
The Alfa Romeo 33 holds a special place in the company’s history, as nearly a million of these cars were produced. Over its 11-year production run, the model underwent minor changes in 1986 and significant updates in 1989. Production of the 33 ceased in 1994. It was replaced by the Alfa Romeo 145 and 146, which used the same boxer engines but were built on a new platform based on the Fiat Tipo.
First series (1983–1986)
The Alfa Romeo 33 (Type 905) is a five-door hatchback launched in 1983. In 1984, an estate version (Giardinetta, later Sportwagon) appeared, featuring an all-wheel-drive variant. The hatchback was designed by Ermanno Cressoni, whilst the estate was developed by Pininfarina.
The model is known for its agility and powerful boxer engines, but it suffers from issues with the electronics, corrosion, the braking system, and the increased mass of unsprung parts.
Among the innovations were a sliding dashboard and an adjustable steering wheel. The drag coefficient was 0.36. Initially, the 33 1.3 (76 hp) and 33 1.5 Quadrifoglio Oro (85 hp) models were available. The Quadrifoglio Oro version featured a silver radiator grille, two-tone bodywork, a beige interior, tinted windows and an on-board computer.
In the autumn of 1986, Alfa Romeo updated the model range. Externally, the changes included transparent indicators, new wheel trims, side skirts, a redesigned radiator grille and the discontinuation of two-tone paint schemes. All 1.5 versions were fitted with a 105 hp engine, whilst the TI (Turismo Internazionale) was exclusive to the 1.5 hatchback.
Second series (1990–1995)
In late 1989, Alfa Romeo released an updated version of the 33 model — the ‘Nuova’ 33 series (type 907). It went on sale in January 1990. The car featured a new interior, a fuel injection system and a modernised 1.7-litre engine producing 137 hp. The design of the front and rear sections represented the new ‘family style’, introduced by the 164 model.
From 1992, the model became the Q4. Later versions of the 33 did not suffer from the rust problems characteristic of its predecessors, thanks to galvanised frames, first used in the Alfa Romeo 164.
