The Alfa Romeo Alfetta (Type 116) is a five-seater front-engined saloon and coupé produced by the Italian company Alfa Romeo from 1972 to 1987. Over 400,000 cars were manufactured during this period.
The name Alfetta translates from Italian as ‘little Alfa’. It derives from the nickname of the Alfa Romeo Tipo 159, a successful Formula 1 car.
In April 1984, Alfa Romeo unveiled the Alfetta’s successor — the larger Alfa Romeo 90. Production of the Alfetta Berlina ceased at the end of the year after nearly 450,000 models produced.

Unveiled at the Geneva Motor Show in 1977, the Alfetta notchback (‘Berlina’) replaced the Alfa Romeo 2000. This model was 10.5 cm longer than its predecessors, thanks to a redesigned front end featuring rectangular headlights and large bumpers with polyurethane inserts.
A year later, in July 1978, the two-litre version was named the Alfetta 2000 L. Engine power increased from 122 to 130 HP. The interior trim and dashboard were updated, and wood-effect trim was introduced. In 1979, the Alfetta 2000 had a fuel injection system.
In late 1979, Alfa Romeo unveiled the Alfetta Turbo D, featuring a turbocharged diesel engine from VM Motori. Both inside and out, the car resembled the top-of-the-range 2000 L model, with the exception of the badge on the boot. The 2.0-litre turbocharged diesel engine produced 82 HP. The Alfetta Turbo D was mainly for Italian and French markets.
In November 1981, Alfa Romeo unveiled the updated ‘Alfetta ’82’ range. It included models with 1.6-, 1.8-, 2.0- and 2.0-litre turbo-diesel engines. The models were distinguished by black plastic sill trims, rear light surrounds and wheel covers. The 2000 model featured a matt silver radiator grille and a steering wheel with a mahogany finish.
In March 1983, the Alfetta underwent its third and final facelift. The update introduced a revised exterior with new bumpers featuring a front spoiler, a new radiator grille, plastic lower-body cladding, and silver wheel covers. At the rear, the redesign added a grey plastic panel that supported the rectangular tail lights and number plate. The revision also relocated the ventilation vents on the C-pillar to either side of the rear window. Inside, the facelift updated the dashboard, instruments, door panels, and Quadrifoglio Oro control panel.
