Alfa Romeo 159 (Series 939)
Grey Alfa Romeo 159 Berlina at Arkhangelskoye Estate (Moscow Region, Russia)
The Alfa Romeo 159 (Type 939) is a car that was manufactured by the Italian company Alfa Romeo from 2004 to 2011. It belongs to the compact executive car segment and is available in two body styles: a four-door saloon and a five-door estate. Unveiled at the 2005 Geneva Motor Show, the 159 replaced the 156 model. The car is built on the GM/Fiat Premium platform, which is also used for the Alfa Romeo Brera and Spider, as well as for the Kamal and Visconti concept cars.
For the 159i sold in South Africa, see Alfa Romeo Alfetta.
Description
Different trim levels were available depending on the market. There were usually four variants: Progression, Distinctive, Exclusive and Turismo Internazionale (TI). In addition, the 159 was available with the Blue&Me infotainment system.
The Sportwagon was unveiled at the Geneva Motor Show in 2006. In the same year, an automatic gearbox became available for the model with the 2.4-litre JTDM diesel engine. This option was later extended to other versions. In 2007, an all-wheel-drive diesel model was introduced, and the power output of the 2.4-litre diesel engines was increased to 210 HP. A new TI trim level also became available as an option.
In 2009, Alfa Romeo introduced the 1.742-litre TBi turbocharged petrol engine. It features direct injection and variable valve timing on both the intake and exhaust camshafts. The engine produces 200 HP and 320 Nm of torque. This unit replaced the 2.2-litre and 1.9-litre JTS engines developed by GM. A new 170 HP JTDm diesel engine also became available that year.

The 159 model was available with front-wheel and all-wheel drive. The ‘Q4’ all-wheel drive system had a Torsen Type-C dual-clutch differential, combining the front and centre differentials with an open front differential. This system was available for the 3.2-litre petrol and 2.4-litre diesel engines.
Most models had a six-speed manual gearbox (a five-speed on the 1.8-litre engines), whilst a six-speed Q-Tronic automatic gearbox (Aisin AW TF-80SC) was for the 1.9-litre diesel, 2.4-litre diesel and 3.2-litre petrol engines. In some markets, a Selespeed automated manual gearbox was available with the 2.2-litre petrol engine.
All petrol engines, except the 1.8-litre, featured the JTS direct fuel injection system. The JTD diesel engines had the Common Rail system.
