The Alfa Romeo GTV and Alfa Romeo Spider (Type 916) were sports cars produced by the Italian car manufacturer Alfa Romeo between 1993 and 2004. The GTV was a four-seater coupé, whilst the Spider was a two-seater roadster.
The name GTV (Gran Turismo Veloce) signalled a continuation of the Alfetta GTV coupé, which had long since been discontinued. The Spider replaced the 30-year-old Giulia Spider series. Production of the GTV continued until the arrival of the Brera in 2005, whilst the Spider remained in production for a further year, until the launch of the new Brera-based generation in 2006.
Design
Enrico Fumia at the Pininfarina studio designed the GTV and Spider. The GTV was conceived as a revival of Alfa Romeo’s sports coupés in the 1990s. The design was based on sketches from 1987, and the first full-scale models were ready in July 1988. The drag coefficient was 0.33 for the GTV and 0.38 for the Spider.

The Spider and GTV are based on the Fiat Group’s ‘Tipo Due’ platform, featuring a new multi-link rear suspension. The front suspension and drivetrain was from the 1992 Alfa 155. The radiator grille with round headlights was later used in the Proteo concept. The car has a wedge-shaped body and a low front bumper, whilst the rear section with a ‘Kamma tail’ improves aerodynamics. The Spider has a rounded rear end to accommodate the folding roof. The soft top, with a five-bar frame, folds into a cover behind the seats, and an electric folding mechanism was offered as an option.
Other details include a strip of lights running along the rear of the body and instruments angled towards the driver. At the launch, journalists noted the improvement in Alfa’s build quality and its closeness to its German rivals.
