Urban Ministry Denies Any Plan to Move Kabul Mandawi
The Ministry of Urban Development and Housing said a recent meeting focused on building underground parking in commercial buildings and no decision was made to relocate Kabul’s Mandawi market.
Officials said the meeting included relevant agencies and examined ways to develop parking spaces in basements of multi storey commercial buildings across Kabul.
The ministry said the main goal was to address the growing shortage of parking in high rise buildings and reduce pressure on congested streets.
It added that some references to reducing urban congestion were misinterpreted, including mentions of developing commercial centers on the outskirts of the city.
Authorities stressed that relocation of Mandawi was not discussed and no policy decision has been taken on the matter. The ministry said some media reports incorrectly presented the discussion as a confirmed plan to move the historic market.
Meanwhile, traders and residents also voiced opposition to any potential move, warning that even discussion of relocation by the Taliban would face resistance due to Mandawi’s economic importance and historical significance.
Kabul has experienced rapid urban growth in recent years, leading to increased traffic congestion, limited infrastructure and rising demand for parking and transport solutions.
Urban planners have warned that without long term planning, congestion and infrastructure gaps could worsen, affecting economic activity and daily life in the capital.
Similar challenges are seen in other major cities in the region, where rapid population growth has outpaced infrastructure development and urban services.
Experts say underground parking and decentralized commercial zones can help reduce congestion, but require coordinated investment and policy planning.
The ministry said it remains focused on practical solutions to urban challenges while ensuring that major decisions are not miscommunicated.
Officials emphasized the importance of accurate reporting as the government continues to address infrastructure needs and urban development priorities.
