Toyota Sera

Toyota Sera Purple Toyota Sera at Arkhangelskoye Estate (Moscow Region, Russia) The Toyota Sera (EXY10) is a three-door 2+2 coupé that was manufactured and sold by Toyota from 1990 to 1995. Officially, the car was only available in Japan. The Toyota AXV-II concept car, which later became the production Sera, was first unveiled in 1988. It immediately attracted attention with its glass roof and ‘butterfly doors’. The name Sera comes from the future tense of the French verb ‘être’ — ‘to be’. Overview The Sera was produced in a single body style and with a single engine, but offered various options for the transmission, brakes, climate control and audio system. Toyota offered three trim levels, known as ‘phases’, throughout the production run. Between February 1990 and December 1995, production reached approximately 16,000 cars. Design The Toyota Sera is a 3-door coupé with a monocoque body and ‘butterfly’ doors that open forwards and upwards. Inspired by the McLaren F1, these doors require just 43 cm of side clearance to open fully. The rear boot door is made of a single piece of glass, providing excellent visibility. The car has six glass elements, including curved windows and a glass roof. The front seats have three-point seatbelts and reclining adjustment, whilst the rear bench seat features an armrest and seatbelts. In the standard configuration, the boot has a small opening (52×82 cm) due to the raised sill, but the rear seats fold down, transforming the rear into a cargo area. The Sera is fitted with projector headlights and a compact spare wheel stored under the boot floor. Engine The Sera featured a 1.5-litre 4-cylinder 5E-FHE petrol engine. This was the most powerful version of Toyota’s E-series engines, which also powered the Paseo and Starlet. The engine produced 104 HP and 132 Nm of torque. Engineers mounted it transversely and paired it with front-wheel drive and electronic fuel injection. All versions featured power-assisted rack-and-pinion steering. The gearbox was available as either a 4-speed automatic (Toyota A242L) or a 5-speed manual (Toyota C155). The braking system comprised ventilated discs at the front and drums at the rear. Some versions were available with anti-lock braking system (ABS), which utilised ventilated discs all round.
