Mayflower Street man remanded for promoting gang activity after allegedly throwing up Crip sign in social media photo

By Breaking Belize News Staff: A 22-year-old Belize City resident has been remanded to prison after being charged with promoting gang activity. Jaheem Herman Morris, a labourer of Mayflower Street, appeared unrepresented before newly appointed Magistrate Neeshad Mohammed in Court #6 of the Belize City Magistrate’s Court on Wednesday, where he was read a single charge of promoting gang activity. The allegation against Morris is that he was seen in a photograph displaying a gang hand sign associated with the “Crips.” Morris pleaded not guilty to the charge. However, despite his plea, Magistrate Mohammed informed him that bail could not be granted at the Magistrate’s Court level, as the offence falls under Section 16 of the Crimes Control and Criminal Justice Act, which restricts the lower court from granting bail for such charges. He was subsequently remanded to the Belize Central Prison until June 15, 2026. The court advised Morris that he may seek bail through an application to the High Court with the assistance of an attorney.
