Movement is medicine
YVONNE CAIN, at 75, is redefining what it means to age well.
A proud resident of Southern Cross Care (NSW & ACT)’s Cardinal Gilroy Retirement Living Village in Merrylands, Yvonne has embraced the village’s wellness program with a passion that puts people half her age to shame.
Six days a week, you’ll find her in the village’s state-of-the-art gym, powering through a mix of cardio, strength, stretch and balance classes – and she says it’s given her a whole new lease on life.

And with units now available, it’s the perfect time to see the village for yourself at our Open Day on May 22.
“There’s no way I’d be this healthy and fit without the gym and the wonderful staff to help me use it,” Yvonne says, beaming.
“You’re never too old to train. I’m an example of that – old age really is just a number.”
In just ten weeks, the changes have been remarkable. Yvonne no longer experiences shortness of breath, and her improved strength has helped her feel more confident doing the things she loves – volunteering in the village, cooking and tending to her garden.
“I really do live by the motto ‘use it or lose it’,” she says.
“Some mornings when it’s cold it’s hard to get to the gym, but my grandkids keep me motivated and I always feel so much better for it. I’m so lucky to be in a village that has a gym and such great supportive staff.”

And the gym is just one part of what makes Cardinal Gilroy Village (CGV) such a vibrant place to live. The community now features its own café, hairdresser, pool room, library and prayer room, creating a warm, social and connected atmosphere where residents can stay active, engaged and independent.
Exercise Physiologist Alexia Kazanzidis has seen Yvonne’s transformation firsthand.
“Movement is medicine,” she says. “It’s about feeling good, maintaining independence and improving quality of life.”
If you’d like to experience the lifestyle Yvonne enjoys, there’s a Cardinal Gilroy Village Open Day on May 22 in Merrylands.
Explore the facilities, meet the team and discover a community where residents are truly living well.
