The Chevrolet Tahoe is a line of full-size SUVs from Chevrolet marketed since the 1995 model year. Marketed alongside the GMC Yukon for its entire production, the Tahoe is the successor of the Chevrolet K5 Blazer; the Yukon has replaced the full-sized GMC Jimmy.
I Generation (GMT400)
In 1992, General Motors updated its lineup of full-size SUVs, transitioning from the Rounded-Line C/K chassis to the new GMT400 platform. In addition, changes to the body design increased the degree of component standardization between the three-door station wagons and the five-door Suburban.
The names were also changed. GMC resumed production of the Jimmy model, but now under the name GMC Yukon. Chevrolet, in turn, renamed the Chevrolet Blazer to Tahoe.
The standard engine for the Blazer/Tahoe and Yukon models was a 350-cubic-inch (5.7-liter) small-block V8. In 1994, a 6.5-cubic-inch (395 cubic-inch) turbocharged V8 produced by Detroit Diesel became available as an option. This engine, offered exclusively on three-door all-wheel-drive models, was detuned to 360 lb-ft (488 N·m) of torque to match the rear axle load capacity of the Tahoe 1500 series. In 1996, the 5.7-liter engine was renamed the Vortec 5700, reflecting design improvements aimed at increasing power and fuel efficiency.
Transmission options included a four-speed automatic and a five-speed manual, the latter of which was offered only on two-door all-wheel-drive models and was discontinued after 1995.
