Dazzling Dolphins aim to defend title against all odds

Sunday Standard Dazzling Dolphins aim to defend title against all odds Reigning champions Dolphins Basketball Club have set their sights on defending their title in the much-anticipated Botswana Basketball League, despite a turbulent pre-season marked by delays and uncertainty. The club, which clinched victory in both the men’s and women’s teams last season, now faces a different kind of challenge maintaining momentum in the face of organisational setbacks. “We had planned an eight-week pre-season starting on the 2nd of January, unfortunately, most players stopped attending training due to frustration of changing league dates. It was also becoming costly for them financially,” said the head coach Shalosh Matsetse. Meanwhile, the repeated postponements of the league have further complicated preparations. Initially scheduled to tip off in March, the season was first pushed to April 10 before being moved again to May 8, 2026. The Botswana Basketball Association (BBA) attributed the delays to compliance issues among teams, citing new regulations from the sport’s governing body. As team officials, Matsetse said they did not know what programme to follow because they did not know when the league would start. Eventually, the players’ morale went low, and the club had to halt training. However, he said the team is now preparing to resume, hoping the league will finally start on May 8 as announced. Matsetse noted, despite these setbacks, Dolphins remain focused. The club has made strategic adjustments to its squad, blending youth with experience in a bid to remain competitive. Dolphins have tried to maintain the core of the old squad, although we have lost a few players. That has not dampened our ambitions. We have recruited young, energetic players and we are confident in our ability to defend the title. In addition, the club has recalled former players to strengthen the roster, their familiarity with the team’s culture and expectations will prove invaluable.” The development of young talent remains central to the club’s philosophy. Several new recruits have already represented Botswana at junior national level, bringing hunger and determination into the squad. Off the court, however, challenges persist. Like many local clubs, Dolphins rely heavily on volunteers, which has contributed to administrative hurdles particularly compliance requirements. “Most of our members are volunteers, and we faced compliance challenges, The club initially tried to process everything online, but the system was down. We have since submitted our application to the Registrar of Societies, but going forward, it would be better to handle such processes physically to avoid delays,” he revealed. The coach said the club’s biggest recent achievement is the international breakthrough of one of its own. Botsile Ramabu has secured a move to Japan, where he now plays semi-professional basketball in the 3×3 league. He said the milestone is following several Dolphins players earning national team call ups and representing Botswana in 3×3 tournaments in Madagascar, a testament to the club’s growing influence.
