Government Signs $4M Contract for New Berry Islands Clinic

BULLOCK’S HARBOUR, Berry Islands — The Government of The Bahamas has signed a $4 million contract for the construction of a new community clinic in the Berry Islands, aimed at improving access to healthcare for residents in the northern cays. The contract has been awarded to Winder Construction, as part of the government’s broader $43 million Health System Strengthening Programme, which is being supported by the Inter-American Development Bank (IDB). The facility will be constructed near Bamboo Cay and is expected to serve as a central hub for healthcare services in the area. For years, residents have relied on limited local facilities or have had to travel to New Providence to access urgent medical care. Health officials said the project represents a significant step toward expanding healthcare services in underserved communities. “This clinic represents our commitment to ensuring that every Bahamian, regardless of location, has access to quality healthcare,” the Minister of Health and Wellness said during the signing ceremony. “At the same time, this initiative supports local industry by engaging Bahamian contractors in national development.” The new clinic is expected to feature modern, climate-resilient design and will be outfitted with advanced medical equipment. Plans for the facility include an urgent care and trauma suite, a telemedicine unit linking patients to specialists in Nassau and overseas, as well as maternity and dental services. In addition, staff housing will be incorporated into the design to accommodate healthcare professionals on-site, allowing for round-the-clock medical coverage. Construction is expected to begin within the next month, with completion projected within 14 to 18 months. The project is also expected to generate employment opportunities for residents of the Berry Islands during the construction phase. The development follows recent healthcare infrastructure projects across the Family Islands, including the opening of the Rum Cay Community Clinic and ongoing works at the Palmetto Point Clinic in Eleuthera, as the government continues efforts to expand and modernize healthcare services nationwide. The post Government Signs $4M Contract for New Berry Islands Clinic first appeared on Bahamas National.
