Mnangagwa Mourns Zambia’s Former Leader Edgar Lungu

President Emmerson Mnangagwa has expressed deep sorrow following the sudden death of former Zambian President Edgar Lungu, who passed away on June 5, 2025. In a condolence message addressed to Zambian President Hakainde Hichilema, President Mnangagwa described Lungu as an “illustrious and revered leader” who served the people of Zambia with “distinction, humility, and honour.” Wrote Mnangagwa: On behalf of the Government, the people of the Republic of Zimbabwe, my family and indeed, on my own behalf, I extend to you Your Excellency, the great people of Zambia and the bereaved Lungu family, our deepest sympathy and heartfelt condolences. Mnangagwa praised the late president for his commitment to justice and his enduring advocacy for the underprivileged. He said: His unwavering commitment to fight for justice and dignity, particularly for the underprivileged, shall continue to inspire present and future generations. Mnangagwa also recalled Lungu’s contributions to regional cooperation and noted his efforts in strengthening ties within the Southern African Development Community (SADC), and between Zimbabwe and Zambia in particular. Lungu, who served as Zambia’s sixth president from 2015 to 2021, was 68.
